Murtal valley, Styria

JUFA Hotel Judenburg***

It all began here over 30 years ago with the conversion of a former monastery located in the Styrian Murtal valley: The JUFA Hotel idea became reality and our first location, the JUFA Hotel Judenburg***, was opened.

The more than 400-year-old complex consists of four wings around an inner courtyard. Its current appearance in the early baroque style dates back to the 17th century: At this time, the Jesuit order, which was brought to Styria to combat the new Protestant churches, took over the monastery. However, monks had already been living here before that – since 1364 – from the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine.

From the cosy rooms, to the homely monastery café, to the unique seminar room under the old roof timbers, you can experience the charm of the listed building throughout the whole hotel.

Pyhrn-Priel, Upper Austria

JUFA Hotel Spital am Pyhrn***

Anyone looking at the rugged backdrop of the Kalkalpen range in Spital am Pyhrn may wonder how such a mighty monastery could have been built here. The answer lies in those mountains: the history of a hostel in Spital goes back around 1,000 years to Emperor Henry II, who had accommodation built here for travellers so that the Pyhrn Pass could also be crossed in winter.

In 1418, the hostel was converted into an abbey. It was remodelled and rebuilt on a grand scale in the 17th and 18th centuries: The comprehensive architecture consisting of a four-winged abbey building and the cathedral was created, which houses important Austrian Baroque art treasures and today’s hotel.

From the spacious rooms to the vaulted café and the seminar rooms with their magnificent stucco ceilings, you can still feel the flair of history in every corner. Guests and day trippers can take a relaxing break in the sunny arcaded courtyard – even if there is no arduous pass crossing ahead. Incidentally, the unusual place name comes from the Slavic word ‘pyro’ for hill. More than appropriate with this panorama!

Industrial

Lake Constance, Vorarlberg

JUFA Hotel Bregenz***

Industrial chic, but real! The JUFA Hotel Bregenz*** is more than just made to look ‘vintage’. The rooms, reception, restaurant and café are housed in former factory buildings from the late 19th century. Especially in the courtyard, you get a good impression of the edgy brick industrial architecture.

Today we might think it cool, but in the 1890s it was a means to an end: the Benger und Söhne company manufactured underwear and stockings on the premises. But there was also room for beautiful things. The building opposite, which housed the administration, is more elaborately designed with its turret and neo-Gothic bay windows. The original wood panelling is still preserved in one of today’s apartments!

But time does not stand still. In 2023, a modern extension was added to the original Benger buildings to create the courtyard. Care was taken in the design to ensure that the new building also fits into the ensemble: The red-painted wooden façade harmonises perfectly with the historic bricks.

Thermenland, Styria

JUFA Hotel Fürstenfeld***s

Town houses

Lake Constance, Germany

JUFA Hotel Meersburg

In the heart of Meersburg’s upper town, the highlights of the excellently preserved old town – from the oldest inhabited castle in Germany to one of the largest preserved wine presses in Europe and the medieval town gates – are just a stone’s throw away.

As soon as you check in, you can feel more than just a hint of history: the main building with reception and restaurant area dates back to Meersburg’s heyday in the 18th century, when the archbishops of Constance had their seat in the town.

Today, you can enjoy your coffee and admire the baroque architecture in the courtyard of the horseshoe-shaped building – originally built as a monastery courtyard. (Tip: you can recognize it by the ornate scrolls on the gables, for example). Spend the night just a few meters down the alley in a historic residential building, nestled in a charming street.
